[Michael Cadnum] -- Overcome with guilt when he accidentally kills his best friend Mead, Peter, an alcoholic teenager, hides the body and embraces the fantasy that Mead still lives, even going so far as to impersonate. I’m thrilled to feature Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler on Story Matters today. Not only is this the She Reads book-of-the-month pick, but it’s my favorite She Reads selection to date. It’s just so good. Debut novelist Julie Kibler began writing Calling Me Home after learning a bit of family history: as a teen, her grandmother fell in love with a young black man, but their families drove.

A wonderful ending to a great book. Calling Me Home is a beautiful story that successfully deals with many topics. It's a historical fiction read that deals with interracial marriage, civil rights, parenting and women's rights. But mostly it's about forbidden love and a friendship that, sadly, society still doesn't whole-heartedly support. /5(K). Calling Me Home | In Calling Me Home by Julie Kibler, eighty-nine-year-old Isabelle McAllister has a favor to ask her hairdresser Dorrie Curtis. It's a big one. Isabelle wants Dorrie, a black single mom in her thirties, to drop everything to drive Isabelle from her home in Arlington, Texas, to a funeral in : St. Martin's Griffin.

"Calling Me Home" tells two stories, that of Isabelle McAllister and of Dorrie Curtis. Isabelle, a year-old white woman from Kentucky, asks Dorrie, a something black woman from Texas, to bring her from where they live, Arlington, Texas, up to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dorrie calls Isabelle Miss. And this is the case with Janna McMahan's CALLING HOME. At times while reading McMahan's breathtaking novel, Every once in a while—about once a year if you're really lucky—you read a novel that is written so well written and with such care that it feels like the book is not about fictional characters but about people you know/5.

“ a heartbreaking read.” For an avid reader, little can match the thrill of a character pulling you into her world the second she arrives on the page as Isabelle does in the opening page of Calling Me Home.

The essay “Calling Home”, written by Jean Brandt was about her experience as a child on a supposedly happy day at the mall, which turned sour because she stole a cent snoopy button, followed by the nerve wrecking situations she had to face.
